Can You Win the Lottery? What Changes the Odds, What Doesn’t
Nothing makes a lottery win likely. A few choices change the odds or your share of a prize, and each has a cost. Most tips change nothing. The calculator below shows the numbers.
Playing Lotto Max 104 times a year for 10 years costs $6,240. The chance of its top prize in that time is 1 in 32,160.
Changes the chance: which game
The same $6,240 spent on each game (whole plays only), top prize only:
Bars use a log scale: each sixth of the bar is ten times the chance. Top prizes differ a lot in size: a game with better odds usually has a much smaller top prize.
Changes the chance and the cost: more plays or a pool
A pool buys more plays with the same money from each person, so its chance grows about as many times as there are people, and a prize is shared by all of them. On average each person gets back the same as playing alone.
Changes nothing
Every combination has the same chance in every draw. Numbers you choose can change how many people share a jackpot, not the chance to win it.

What really changes the odds

|---|---|---|
| Lotto Max alone | 1 in 32,160 | $6,240 |
| Another game | Lightning Lotto (OLG): 1 in 204.2 for the same money | Top prize differs in size from a Lotto Max jackpot |
| Lotto Max, twice the plays | 1 in 16,080 | Twice the money |
| Lotto Max, pool of 10 | 1 in 3,216 (the pool’s chance) | Each of 10 members pays $6,240; any prize is split |

What changes only your share
Same chance, different share
Your numbers do not change the chance of a match. If other plays have the same numbers, the jackpot is split between all of them.
Example with random numbers
86.4%For example, with 10,000,000 plays of random numbers in a Lotto Max draw, a jackpot winner keeps on average 86.4% of the jackpot (the rest goes to other winners).
Quick Pick or own numbers
Both have the same odds. How a jackpot is shared between winners: see jackpot sharing.

Questions
Is there a way to win the lottery?
No method makes a win likely. Every combination has the same chance in every draw. For example, the Lotto Max jackpot odds are 1 in 33,446,140 per play, whether you choose the numbers or use Quick Pick.
Which lottery is easiest to win?
Among the lotto games on this site, the same money ($6,240) gives the best chance of a top prize in Lightning Lotto (OLG): 1 in 204.2, whole plays only. Its top prize differs in size from a Lotto Max jackpot.
Does a lottery pool change the odds?
A pool buys more plays, so the group’s chance is higher: for example, 1 in 3,216 for a Lotto Max pool of 10 instead of 1 in 32,160 alone. Each member pays $6,240, and any prize is split.
Do hot numbers or lucky stores help?
No. Each draw is random, and past draws do not change the next one. A ticket has the same odds wherever it is sold and whatever numbers it has.
