Three ways to write one chance

FormWhat it saysWhere you see it
1 in NOne winning outcome among N equal outcomesGame conditions and official odds tables
PercentHow many times out of a hundredEveryday comparisons, news, school math
Per millionHow many times out of a millionVery small chances, like jackpots

All three forms describe the same chance. Only the way it is written changes.

From 1 in N to percent

percent = one hundred ÷ N; per million = one million ÷ N

Example: For example: 1 in 8 = 12.5% = 125,000 in a million.

From percent back to 1 in N

N = one hundred ÷ percent

Example: For example, in 1 in 8 = 12.5% = 125,000 in a million: one hundred ÷ the percent gives N, the number in the 1 in N form.

Questions

How do I convert lottery odds to a percentage?

Divide one hundred by N from the 1 in N form. For example: 1 in 8 = 12.5% = 125,000 in a million. The converter above does this for any game and also shows the count per million.

What does 1 in a million odds mean?

On average, one outcome in a million equal outcomes is the winning one. It does not mean a win comes after a million tries – each draw is separate. See the rarity scale for comparisons.

Is 1 to N the same as 1 in N?

No. 1 to N counts one win against N losses, so it equals 1 in N+1. The gap matters for small N and almost disappears for jackpot odds such as 1 in 33,446,140.

What is the Lotto Max jackpot chance as a percent?

The official odds are 1 in 33,446,140 per play. Type that value into the converter above to see it as a percent and per million – it is a tiny fraction of a percent.
