How a Poker Lotto ticket works

  1. Get your handsA ticket has one to three hands of five cards from a standard deck. In the OLG version, hands are Quick Pick only.
  2. Check the instant prizeYour hand is ranked like a poker hand. Prize hands pay at once. Every hand has the same chance.
  3. Wait for the drawFive cards are drawn from a standard deck. If at least 2 of 5 of your cards match the draw, you win a draw prize.
  4. Add-on, if chosenALL IN (OLG, WCLC) or Plus (Loto-Québec) costs extra per hand and changes some instant prizes.

Return is the average share of the price paid back as fixed prizes. Royal and straight flush add-on prizes come from a growing jackpot, which is not counted here.

Expected loss per hand

Expected loss = price paid − (price paid × return)

Example: For example, at the OLG base return of 59.9%, a hand pays back that share of its price on average; the rest is expected loss.

OLG and WCLC vs Loto-Québec

OLG and WCLC

  • The add-on is called ALL IN and is charged per hand
  • One to three hands per ticket
  • OLG: Quick Pick only, and the same hand is not issued twice on a ticket
  • There is a draw every night
  • OLG limits total draw prizes per draw
  • WCLC: many winners of the top draw prize share a fixed amount

Loto-Québec

  • The add-on is called Plus and is charged per selection
  • Up to three selections per ticket
  • All cards on a ticket come from one deck
  • So the same card never appears in two selections
  • Total prizes for each category are limited per draw
  • With Plus, a royal or straight flush pays from a progressive prize
