Words used on this page
- Line
- One selection of seven numbers on a Lotto Max ticket.
- Wheel
- A list of lines made from more numbers than one line holds. It is chosen so that a stated match is covered when its condition is met.
- Guarantee "X if Y"
- If Y of the drawn main numbers are among your chosen numbers, at least one of your lines holds X of them.
- Condition
- The "if" part of the guarantee. When fewer drawn numbers fall among your picks, the guarantee does not apply.
- Combination play
- Buying every line that can be made from your chosen numbers. See combination play.
Lines for a covered match
| Set of lines | Your numbers | Guarantee | Lines |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wheel, for example | 10 | 4 if 4 | 12 |
| Lower limit: no wheel uses fewer | 10 | 4 if 4 | 9 |
| Every line of those numbers | 10 | All seven on one line if all seven drawn are yours | 120 |
The calculator above shows lines and cost for your own choice of numbers and guarantee.
How to read a guarantee
- Pick a set of numbersFor example, 10 numbers instead of the seven on one line.
- Choose the guaranteeFor example, 4 if 4. The wheel then lists 12 lines instead of all 120.
- Check the conditionThe guarantee counts only if enough drawn main numbers are among your set. The draw decides this, not the wheel.
- Compare the valueEach line has the same odds as any other line. The expected value per dollar does not change.
Wheel vs combination play
Combination play
- Buys every line your chosen numbers can make.
- At OLG: eight-number play, 8 lines, $48 per draw.
- At OLG: nine-number play, 36 lines, $216 per draw.
- If all drawn main numbers are among yours, one line holds them all.
Wheel
- Buys only part of those lines.
- For example, 12 of 120 lines for 10 numbers.
- Covers only the stated match, and only under its condition.
- Can miss a higher match that combination play would hold.
What a wheel does not change
Odds of each line
Every line has the same chance in each draw. A wheel only decides which lines you hold.
Past draws
Earlier results do not change the next draw. Quick pick and your own numbers have the same odds.
Fixed-prize return per dollar
10.8%Fixed prizes only: the same for a wheel and for random lines in the calculator above.
Covering everything
Full cover means buying every combination. See what that costs.

Questions
Do lottery wheels work?
A wheel does what it states: it covers one match if enough drawn numbers are among your picks. It does not change the odds of any line or the expected value per dollar.
What does a lottery wheel really cover?
Only the stated match, for example 4 if 4 with 10 numbers in 12 lines. If fewer drawn numbers fall among your picks, the guarantee does not apply.
Is a wheel the same as combination play?
No. Combination play buys all lines of your numbers, for example 36 lines for nine numbers at OLG. A wheel buys only some of them, so it covers less.
Why does a wheel need fewer lines than every combination?
It covers only one kind of match. For 10 numbers, every combination is 120 lines; the example wheel uses 12, and no wheel with that guarantee uses fewer than 9.
