Lottery Independent Events: Past Results and the Next Draw
Are lottery draws independent? Yes. The demo below puts a coin next to a drum model of Lotto Max. It shows how often each result comes after a streak and at any time.

Chance of one number per draw
chance = main numbers drawn ÷ numbers in the game = 7 ÷ 52 = 13.5%
Example: For example, a number that has not been drawn for a long time still has a 13.5% chance in the next draw.
After a streak vs any time
After a long absence
- Take only the draws that follow a long gap for one number
- Count how often that number is drawn next
- Result over many draws: about 13.5%
At any time
- Take all draws, with no filter
- Count how often the same number is drawn
- Result over many draws: about 13.5%
Coin and Lotto Max side by side
| Question | Coin | Lotto Max draw |
|---|---|---|
| What decides the result | One toss | Numbers drawn at random |
| Chance per try | Heads and tails are equal | 13.5% for each number |
| Does the last result matter | No | No |
| After a long streak | Same chance as always | Same chance as always |
| Over many tries | Share of heads settles near half | Each number is a main number in about 13.5% of draws |
Earlier results are not made up for. With more draws, the old streak becomes a smaller part of the total.
Why patterns still appear
Streaks are normal
Random draws often give repeats and long gaps. A run of one result is expected, not a signal.
Hot and cold numbers
Counts from past draws describe the past only. They do not change the next draw.
A random pick each draw
The game conditions say the numbers are drawn at random. The drum in the demo is only a model of that random pick.
Test the "due" idea
Check whether a number that has waited a long time comes up more often. It does not.
Words on this page
- Independent event
- A result that is not affected by earlier results. Each lottery draw is one.
- Streak
- A run of the same result, or a long gap for one number, in a row of draws.
- Gambler's fallacy
- The wrong belief that a result is "due" because it has not happened for a while.
- Conditional frequency
- How often a result happens only in the cases that follow a chosen event, such as a long gap.

Questions
Are lottery draws independent?
Yes. Lotto Max numbers are drawn at random, so earlier draws do not affect the next one. A given number has a 13.5% chance to be a main number in every draw, whatever came before.
Does a lottery number become due if it has not come up?
No. A number that missed many draws has the same chance next draw as any other: 13.5% in Lotto Max. The Gambler's Fallacy Trainer shows this with many simulated draws.
Why do patterns appear in random lottery draws?
With many draws, repeats, gaps and clusters happen by chance alone. They look meaningful, but they describe the past and do not predict the next draw.
Do quick pick numbers have different odds from my own numbers?
No. The draw does not depend on how a ticket was chosen. Every combination has the same chance in each draw.
