The formula behind every lotto

P(k matches) = C(pick, k) × C(pool − pick, drawn − k) ÷ C(pool, drawn)

Example: Lotto 6/49 jackpot: one winning combination out of 13,983,816, so the odds are 1 in 13,983,816.

Words in the formula

Pool
All numbers in the drum.
Drawn
How many numbers the draw picks from the pool.
Pick
How many numbers are on your selection.
k
The number of matches you want the odds for.
C(n, r)
The number of ways to choose r numbers out of n when order does not matter.

Check a game in four steps

  1. Choose a preset or rulesPick a Canadian game from the presets, or type the numbers in the drum, numbers drawn, numbers you pick and bonus balls.
  2. Add a second drumIf the game draws from a separate set of numbers, like the Daily Grand Grand Number, enter it as the second drum.
  3. Read the tier tableEvery match level appears as an exact fraction, as odds and as a percent. Open the formula to see the math.
  4. Compare with official oddsCheck the result against the odds in the game conditions. Small gaps come from rounding.

Bonus ball vs second drum

Bonus ball, same drum

  • Drawn after the main numbers from the balls left in the drum.
  • Splits one tier in two, for example 5 of 6 and 5 of 6 + bonus.
  • Does not change the jackpot odds.
  • Used in Lotto 6/49, Ontario 49 and Lotto Max.

Second drum

  • A separate set of numbers, drawn on its own.
  • Every main tier splits into with and without the second-drum match.
  • Jackpot odds = main-drum odds × numbers in the second drum.
  • Used in Daily Grand for the Grand Number.

Questions

How do you calculate lottery odds?

Count all combinations the draw can produce, then count the combinations that give the match you want. Divide the second count by the first. For Lotto 6/49 the jackpot odds are 1 in 13,983,816.

How does a bonus number change the odds?

A bonus ball from the same drum splits a tier in two, for example 5 of 6 and 5 of 6 + bonus. A separate drum, like the Daily Grand Grand Number, makes every combined match less likely.

Why do my results differ slightly from the official odds?

Operators round their figures and call them approximate. Lotto Max also lists odds per play, and one play has several selections. The calculator shows exact values for one selection.

Can I use this lottery calculator for a US lottery?

Yes, if the game draws numbers from a drum. Type its rules: numbers in the drum, numbers drawn and numbers you pick. Use the second drum for a bonus ball drawn from a separate set.
