How the Gold Ball drum works

  1. Full drumA cycle starts with thirty prize balls: twenty-nine white balls and one gold ball.
  2. One ball per drawOn each draw date one ball is drawn. It sets the prize for the winning Gold Ball Draw Number.
  3. White ball drawnThe winner gets the fixed white-ball prize. That white ball is removed, so the drum has one ball fewer.
  4. Gold ball drawnThe winner gets the Gold Ball Jackpot. The cycle ends and the drum starts again with all balls.

Cycle length

Median cycle

15 draws

Half of all cycles end by this draw, half last longer.

Mean cycle

15.5 draws

The average over very many cycles. The simulator's average moves toward it as cycles add up.

Each length equally likely

1 in 30

From the start of a cycle, the gold ball is as likely on the first draw as on the last.

Longest possible cycle

Thirtieth draw

With one ball left, it can only be gold: the chance is 1 in 1.

Where cycles end

Cycle ends onExact chance
First to fifth draw1 in 6
Sixth to tenth draw1 in 6
Eleventh to fifteenth draw1 in 6
Sixteenth to twentieth draw1 in 6
Twenty-first to twenty-fifth draw1 in 6
Twenty-sixth to thirtieth draw1 in 6

All bands have the same chance, so after many cycles the simulator's histogram should look flat.

Chance for the next draw

Chance the next ball is gold = one divided by the number of balls left in the drum

Example: For example, with twenty balls left, the chance is 1 in 20.

Two ways to read the chance

Looking at the next draw

  • Counts only the balls still in the drum
  • Rises as white balls are removed
  • Goes from 1 in 30 to 1 in 1

Looking from cycle start

  • Asks on which draw the cycle will end
  • Every draw has the same chance
  • Each one is 1 in 30

Questions

How long does a Gold Ball cycle last?

From the first draw up to the thirtieth. The exact median is 15 draws and the mean is 15.5 draws. Each single length has the same chance, 1 in 30.

Does the gold ball get more likely with each draw?

For the next draw, yes. Each white ball drawn is removed, so the chance rises from 1 in 30 with a full drum to 1 in 1 with one ball left.

When in a cycle is the gold ball most likely to appear?

Seen from the start of a cycle, no draw is more likely than another: each has 1 in 30. A later draw has a higher chance only once the earlier white balls are already gone.

Does the number of balls left change my chance to win the Gold Ball draw?

No. The balls left decide only which prize the winning Gold Ball Draw Number receives, not whose number is selected. More tools are on lottery simulators.
