Counts and the chance band
| Measure | Value | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Draws in the archive | 1,861 | Every saved draw from January 3, 2009 |
| Rule versions in the archive | 1 | Same drum size for the whole archive |
| Numbers in the drum | 49 | Each one has the same chance in every draw |
| Band of chance for one number | 201 to 256 | Where a fair count usually lands by luck alone |
| Numbers outside the band | 4 | Counts past the band edges in our archive |
| Expected outside with fair draws | 2.3 | Some numbers fall outside even when draws are fair |
| Chi-square p-value | 0.34 | A very small value would point to uneven draws |
A few numbers outside the band is normal. The chi-square test looks at all numbers together, so it is the better check.
How the test works
- Count each numberAdd up how many times each number was drawn in the saved archive.
- Find the expected countWith fair draws, every number should come up about equally often over the same set of draws.
- Set the band of chanceThe math of fair draws gives the range one count can drift to by luck alone.
- Run the chi-square testIt adds up how far all counts sit from the expected count, corrected for numbers drawn without replacement.
- Read the p-valueA very small p-value would point to uneven draws. A larger one means the spread looks like normal chance.
Hot and cold numbers: myth and math
What people assume
- A hot number will keep coming up
- A cold number has to come up soon
- Picking hot numbers changes the odds
- Unequal counts mean the draw is unfair
What the counts show
- Most counts stay inside the band of chance; a few edge outside it
- Past draws do not change the chance of the next draw
- Every combination has the same odds
- Some spread is exactly what fair random draws produce

Questions
What are the most common Québec 49 numbers?
They change after every draw, so the tool above lists them live. Most counts sit inside the band of chance, and being drawn often does not make a number more likely next time.
Do cold Québec 49 numbers have to come up?
No. Each draw is independent. A number that has been away a long time has the same chance as any other in the next draw: 12.2%. No number is ever due.
Why are the Québec 49 counts not equal?
Random draws do not give equal counts. Some numbers land above the expected count and some below by chance alone. The band of chance, 201 to 256, shows how wide that spread usually is.
Do the Québec 49 statistics show the draw is random?
The chi-square p-value of the saved archive is 0.34; only a very small value would point to uneven draws. A test cannot prove fairness; it can only find no evidence against it.
